Injectables

Injectables are artificial hormonal preparations. They are only administered in the health care center. There are three types of injectables namely *Depo-Provera *Noristerat *Norigynon Today we will talk about DEPO PROVERA it’s sometimes called Depo-Provera, the Depo shot, or DMPA) contains the hormone progestin. Progestin stops you from getting pregnant by preventing ovulation. Depo- Provera prevents pregnancy by stopping the ovaries from releasing an egg each month. It also works by making cervical mucus thicker. When the mucus on the cervix is thicker, the sperm can’t get through. And when the sperm and the egg can’t get together, pregnancy can’t happen. Depo-Provera gives protection for 12-14 weeks but it’s advisable to take the next shot on the 12th week thus 3 months. Thus it gives 3 months protection following injection About 70% of people will have no periods after 4 injections. This is safe and those who have, some may experience irregular or longer than usual periods especially in the first 3 to 6 months Depo-Provera is convenient, does not interfere with sexual intercourse, reduces the risk of endometrial cancer,etc Headaches, irregular menses, spotting, heavy bleeding and amenorrhea (absence of menses) are some possible side effects If you experience any adverse effects whilst using Depo-Provera visit the nearest health facility.
